T. KLEIN Extension Poultry Husbandman, Massachusetts State College Here are some questions which are most commonly asked about poultry culling. 1. What is the most reliable gruide in telling; whether a hen is laying? The appearance of the vent. On a laying hen it is large and moist and usually white in color.

On the non-layer it is small, dry, and usually yellow in color. 2. Will hens lay and molt at the same time? Yes, some of the better layers will, but a good layer will seldom molt this early in the season. Molting hens at this time of the year should 1770 Washington 8L, Boston His. 3268 el Prices Maintained for XO Years on a dull appearance with the comb covered with white scales.

The appearance is far more pronounced in Leghorns than in the heavier breeds. 4. Is it profitable to break up broody hens? Many of them will come back into laying and produce well if broken up when first displaying signs of broodiness. These birds should be confined to a wire bottom coop for a couple of days. 6.

How often should commercial flocks be culled? Birds ill be gcing out of laying continuously during the Summer. The only way to keep flocks laying at 50 to 60 percent production is to cull each week or 10 days. Two circulars, "The Home Poultry Flock," No. 194, and "Culling and Selecting Hens and Pullets," No. 35, will help you with your culling problems.
