NYXI Hyperion Switch Joy-pad impressions (2024)

I recently aquired the NYXI Hyperion Joy-pads in anticipation of TotK. NYXI is same company that makes the Gamecube Joy-pads that you may have already heard of. I have a Steam Deck and I play a lot of handheld mode with the Switch so I wanted something that would be more comfortable and I gotta say - these things are pretty awesome. I've heard the Hori Joy-pads are also nice, but they don't have gyro so that was a deal breaker for me.

Here are some comparison shots --

You can see that they basically turn the Switch into a Steam Deck and you can keep them on while the kickstand is in use. The grips feel very similar to a Xbox controller and the feel of the joysticks feel very similar to the Deck's. I played a few hours of one of the more hand-crampy games, Metroid Prime Remastered, and the experience is night and day. For one, I wouldn't even play a few hours of this game before due to discomfort, and two - moving and looking around with dual sticks is much smoother. I would always have this "jerky" movement when looking around with the joycons and that doesn't happen with these.

I fired up BotW just to see how responsive the gyro was when aiming the bow and arrows and it was perfect.

You can charge them individually or via the charging port on the Switch when they are attached. NYXI says you get 6.5 hours on a full charge if you don't use the LEDs, but the LEDs look cool so I'm keeping them on for now.

There's a programmable button in the back that I might never use, but it's out of the way so nbd. It took a little over two weeks to get them after ordering since they came directly from manufacturing in China. Overall I'm pretty pleased with them initially and should make TotK playtime much more pleasant.

Yeah, I prefer sacrificing a bit of battery from the Switch and not have to deal with this. I use the Hori and I'm not even sure how much it draws, it doesn't have vibration or anything, it's just basic inputs. Seems almost like worrying the power and volume buttons on the console body will drain batteries.

This sounded so good until I saw the picture with the 2 usb cables charging them. Unfortunately it's just too much effort after the QOL Nintendo has given us with the plug and play nature of the switch.

They should've designed the middle piece to charge the 2 controllers instead of having them individually.

I just got the nyxi milk joycons and of all the ones I've tried, they are easily my favorite. I also have the gamecube ones that I love! I've had and tried:
- hori split pad compact (still dig these from time to time)
- hori split pad pro (too big for my lil baby hands)
- nyxi gamecube - love this!
- binbok joycons (rumble was annoyingly loud and strong and had to be turned off over and over)

But these are just right. Love having back buttons, leds look great, buttons feel good, nice weight in the hand, and the sticks feel perfect.

From what I've read, if the two joycons are connected to the Switch, all you need to do it plug a single USB C cable into the Switch OR dock it for the joycons to charge.

Thats what I do with mine - just put it in the dock when I'm done. I've never had to charge mine that way. Didn't even know they had usb ports until this thread and checked! haha.

So the switch can charge the controllers anyway? or it's just when it's plugged in?

Well this product just made more sense. Wonder why OP chose to not charge with the middle piece instead

I think the middle piece sold with the joycons doesn't allow charge. You need to buy a 3rd party one that supports it. But the joycons can be charged through the switch or a middle piece that can charge.

The middle piece doesn't have a port on it. Maybe it does with other models from NYXI? The instructions that come with them aren't very clear.

Although I did check just now and you can charge them through the Switch when they are attached. I'll update the OP.

Looks very similar to the Binboks, which I stopped using because they would do weird stuff in sleep mode and the D-pad was kinda crummy. It's a shame because I liked most other aspects of those.

I'm pretty sure they are actually the same manufacturer as Binbok. The Athena model they have is identical to my Binboks as far as I can tell.

I'm talking about the Switch itself. Not the joycon connector. When connected to the sides, the joycons will charge docked or by plugging 1 cable into the Switch itself.

Picked up a set of the white joycons from them:

The only other set of joycons I've tried were the split pad compact but I returned them the same day. While an improvement, it still didn't feel great because my hands are big. I think I would have preferred the split pad pro in that regard.

These feel pretty good and easily better than the regular joycons. I do like how they fit in my palm. Having that lower part that extends downward really makes a difference for grip. I also like the bigger face buttons. Everything in general is bigger.

I will say, even though this will be my preferred way to play going forward, I still feel improvements can be made. Something about the overall feel of it. I think I'm just too picky, trying to find something that can mimic what an Xbox or Pro Controller would FEEL like (which I personally prefer). But regardless, handheld play feels a lot better now!

I'm not sure what I would map those back buttons to. Currently playing TOTK. Maybe the left back button could be used to pull up the map? Speaking of the back buttons, they fall perfectly with my middle fingers so pressing them isn't an issue at all.

I have been using the hori pros since MonHun Rise and been very happy. Never cared about gyro and amiibo etc. But Totk had me interested in some controllers with gyro, been actually using my joycons due to gyro and they just aren't comfortable.
Also I find the back buttons so good for running etc.

Almost got these but worried about how charging works, can I just leave them connected to the switch in the dock and it will charge?
How is the d pad as well?
