How do you retire from American Airlines? ›

For retirement eligibility, American Airlines uses standard and simplified criteria based on a 65 Point Plan. Simply put, you must have at least 10 years of company service and your age plus years of company service must equal 65 or more when you leave.

You can enroll in retiree medical coverage any time after retirement, up to the age of 65. Call the Benefits Service Center at 888-860-6178 if you miss the annual online retiree medical enrollment window. American reserves the right to amend or terminate the retiree medical plan at any time.

If you're already under your spouse's coverage, your spouse will need to remove you from coverage before you can enroll yourself by calling the Benefit Service Center (1-888-860-6178).

WHAT DO YOU NEED TO RETIRE? You are eligible to retire from American Airlines as early as age 55 with at least 10 years of Company Seniority. Once you retire from American Airlines, you will no longer be on payroll. To compensate for this loss of pay, you will need money in order to retire.

Information for senior travelers

Early boarding is available if you need more time or assistance boarding. You must identify yourself to the gate agent to request early boarding. Wheelchair assistance is available to help with long distances at the airport.

Carry-on devices

If space is limited, the device doesn't fit in the cabin or if it isn't required during the flight, it may need to be checked. These include: Canes, walkers, continuous positive airway pressure machines (CPAP) and other assistive devices that can be collapsed to fit into overhead and under-seat storage.
