Best Time to Visit Amalfi Coast
As one of Italy’s most popular travel destinations, it’s no wonder to find the Amalfi Coast pretty crowded during the summer months. Hence, why it’s often recommended to instead visit the Amalfi Coast is during the shoulder seasons of spring (April to June) and fall (September to October). During these months, the weather is pleasant, the crowds are thinner, and the prices are more reasonable compared to the peak summer months.
How to Get to the Amalfi Coast
The closest major airport to the Amalfi Coast is Naples International Airport (NAP), located about 60 kilometers (37 miles) away. From there, you can take a train to Salerno or Sorrento, which serve as the main gateway towns to Amalfi. Then, from Salerno or Sorrento, you can catch a SITA bus or hire a private car to reach the picturesque towns along the coast, such as Amalfi, Positano, and Ravello. Alternatively, ferries and hydrofoils operate between Naples, Salerno, and the coastal towns, offering a scenic and enjoyable journey along the coast.

Amalfi
Amalfi, the namesake town of the coast, boasts a rich maritime history and a captivating old town. Key attractions include the stunning Amalfi Cathedral (Duomo di Amalfi) with its Arab-Norman architecture, the historic Arsenale, and the serene Paper Museum. The town is also a great starting point for boat tours and excursions to nearby attractions.
Positano
Positano is perhaps the most iconic and photographed town on the coast, known for its colorful cliffside buildings and steep, narrow streets. From strolling about the Positano to relaxing on Amalfi’s stunning beaches, there are plenty of things to do while on the Amalfi Coast. With that being said, our favorite tourist activities are the following:
- Visit the Fiordo di Furore
The Fiordo di Furore is without a doubt, one of the Amalfi Coast’s hidden gems. This dramatic fjord-like inlet, located between Praiano and Amalfi, offers a secluded beach experience.
The fjord is crossed by an ancient stone bridge, from which you can look down at the clear turquoise waters. It’s a perfect spot for swimming, sunbathing, and photography. The tiny beach is often less crowded than the more famous beaches, making it a peaceful retreat.
- Hike the Path of the Gods (Sentiero degli Dei)
For those who love hiking, the Path of the Gods (Sentiero degli Dei) offers one of the most spectacular walks in the world. This trail runs from Bomerano (a fraction of Agerola) to Nocelle, a small village above Positano.
The hike is moderately challenging, but the effort is well worth it. As you walk along the cliff edge, you’ll be treated to panoramic views of the coastline, the sea, and the islands of Capri and Li Galli. The trail is well-marked and takes about 3-4 hours to complete. Along the way, you’ll pass terraced vineyards, ancient stone huts, and aromatic wild herbs.
- Visit Amalfi and the Cathedral of Sant’Andrea
The highlight of Amalfi, the historic heart of the coast, is the Cathedral of Sant’Andrea, a stunning example of Arab-Norman architecture. The cathedral’s striking facade, with its striped patterns and intricate mosaics, dominates the town’s main square. Inside, you’ll find beautiful frescoes, a magnificent bronze door from Constantinople, and the relics of Saint Andrew.
After visiting the cathedral, take a stroll through the town’s winding streets, which are filled with shops selling local products like limoncello and hand-painted ceramics. The Museum of Paper (Museo della Carta) offers an interesting insight into Amalfi’s history as a center of paper production.

Once in Capri, head straight to the Blue Grotto, a sea cave that glows with an ethereal blue light due to the sunlight passing through an underwater cavity. You can enter the grotto on small rowboats, and the experience is truly magical.
